Hello & Welcome!
Dissenting Harmony explores music with themes of sisterhood, feminine rage, truth-telling, and resistance to patriarchy — centering a distinctly feminine and liberatory lens. We incorporate healing frequencies into our performances to anchor emotional and energetic healing within the community. Our work invites audience participation and accessible music-making, empowering others to reclaim their voices and embody the transformative power of collective truth. We reclaim music as our ancestral inheritance. it belongs, not on a stage, but to each of us.

We meet weekly on Sundays 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM CST.
Our rehearsal space is located in central Austin. We'll let you know where the space is after you register.
Members are permitted up to 3 absences per project. Excessive absences will result in removal from participation in performance.
Unfortunately, we don't have the infrastructure to support remote choir members yet. At this time, we require our members to attend rehearsals in person.
There is a registration fee per project. This fee covers some of the costs of our rehearsal space, concert venue, sheet music, accompanist, and our Artistic Director, Abi.
We are committed to making music-making accessible to all treble voices and can waive the fee for those in financial need. Simply indicate this when you fill out the registration form.
We encourage members experiencing financial abundance to sponsor members who are in financial need. This type of reciprocity and care is the true backbone of community.
Nope! Part of the Dissenting Harmony mission is to provide accessible music-making for all women and femme-identifying individuals. Singing together in community is part of our ancestral heritage, and we believe that music, as a tool for healing and belonging, is your birthright.
You can expect to learn by rote (without sheet music) as well as from sheet music. Abi, the director, is an experienced music educator who has taught students of all ages, from kindergarten through adults. She prides herself on holding high standards of musical excellence for her ensembles while making the learning process fun and accessible. You CAN expect to grow your musical and singing knowledge and skills while you are in this ensemble!
You should register! Singing is a skill just like any other - regular practice will help your ability and grow even further! The beautiful thing about singing in a choir is that there is safety in numbers, and the fastest way to improve is to practice with people who are more skilled than you. You don't have to be perfect; you just have to be present.
Plus, for those less comfortable—or wanting a refresher—reading music, we offer a Fundamentals of Music class covering the basics of solfège and rhythm. These classes start a few weeks after the season begins. Stay tuned during announcements for when those will start up.
Yes! If you need to be seated for the performance, need large-print music, or have other accommodations, please do not hesitate to reach out to Abi and the board to communicate your needs. We are committed to providing accessible music-making to all humans and will do our utmost to accommodate you.
Of course! If you are unsure of your voice part, Abi, the director, will help place you at our first rehearsal every season!

Yes! Dissenting Harmony has a select ensemble! This group of 16-24 treble singers has additional rehearsal time to learn advanced repertoire for our concert. Previous choral experience and sight-reading ability are required for participation in this ensemble. Please complete registration and attend rehearsals to learn more!
Yes, most of our projects have solo opportunities for those voices ready for the spotlight!
We're a collaborative bunch. We use Slack as a community-building tool and have a dedicated channel for sharing playlists and music! Abi, the director, often asks for suggestions and feedback for repertoire selection.
